Who is Michael McConnell?
In 1996, Dr. Michael McConnell reported an echocardiographic characteristic indicating right ventricular dysfunction, featuring akinesia of the basal to mid portions of the free wall and hyperdynamic motion of the apex (commonly referred to as sparing). This has proved to be highly specific for acute pulmonary embolism but is not seen in every case. Doctor McConnell’s discovery in Boston, Massachusetts has brought more attention to the right ventricle in these cases and is often referred to as McConnell’s sign.
