Definition
Mitral valve prolapse is defined as abnormal systolic motion of one or both of the mitral valve leaflets; prolapse has to be greater than 2mm past the long axis plane of the mitral annulus into the left atrium. This cardiac anomaly is commonly referred to as degenerative or myxomatous mitral valve disease.
Fun Facts
It is estimated that 2-3% of the general population have MVP which is about 176 million people worldwide. Progressive mitral regurgitation is a common complication making mitral valve prolapse the leading cause for mitral repair/replacement.
