Background

The development of mitral annular calcification (MAC) is a chronic process associated with aging, kidney disease, and previous radiation therapy. Calcium deposits in the fibrosa of the annulus affect the base of the mitral leaflets and coaptation ability. Some of the possible complications of this pathology include mitral stenosis, mitral regurgitation, and an increased risk of embolic events.

Echocardiography is the primary imaging modality to monitor the hemodynamic complications of annular calcification. Surgical treatment options for mitral valve disease can be technically challenging with this degenerative finding. Excess of calcium and lack of viable tissue can complicate annular reconstruction and mitral valve surgery.

Herein we include a case of caseous annular calcification, a unique variant of mitral annular calcification that affects .07% of the general population. Premium members have full access to this case and 75+ other cases in our online library.
