Overview
The left atrial appendage (LAA) is a pouch-like sac that stems from the left atrium; its lack of contractility leads to stagnant flow and supports clot formation. This becomes clinically relevant in cases of atrial fibrillation when the electrical conduction is asynchronous and atrial contraction is reduced.
Echocardiography plays a significant role in the proper placement of LAA occluder devices to improve patient quality of life. This article includes 3D case examples and an in-depth analysis of Watchman device placement with transesophageal echocardiography (TEE).
